My sister passed away unexpectedly on October 2nd, 2012. At that point I had just begun running, completing my first 2 5Ks earlier in the year. I was training for my first half marathon slated for the beginning of 2013 but decided that month I would push myself and signed up for the Surf City 10 miler and ended up running it 3 years in a row in memory of my sister. This year, I opted to skip my annual 10 miler and challenge myself even further with my #ragnarnapa Ultra to #rnrla back to back races, wearing purple on my final “leg” of the weekend in honor of my sister. The “fourth leg” of the weekend… Rock N Roll Los Angeles half marathon. There were no PRs to be had here. Exhausted from #ragnarnapa and getting back to LA after midnight, we were not sure we would be up to run this race. What a difference a few hours of sleep in a real bed makes. We barely made it to the start line in time to meet with our friends who ended up giving us a much needed boost of energy. 35.4 miles in to #ragnarnapa and this is what I really felt like. All the miles ran, the miles driven, 3 hours of sporadic sleep, inconsistent eating, and I had one mile to go. About a mile before that sign I came across another team’s van as I was walking up the hill. The guy handed me a Gatorade, looked down and saw my green ultra bib and said “You are an ultra runner, that doesn’t happen by accident!” Those words from a random stranger pushed me to finish strong.
