Well August is over. Crazy month of running logging over 160 miles, including my first ultramarathon. As I stated before, taking a little rest because things are about to get pretty crazy, especially in Oct/Nov. Some back to backs, some same day races, among other running shenanigans. Some of these could change, but for the most part that’s my schedule for the rest of the year. Last week at this time I was prepping to run the #bulldog50k. Tonight, I’m just taking it easy relaxing and not having to think about training or running for the first time in months. It kind of sucks, but I do need this down time to recover. It’s going to get pretty crazy in the next couple of months. This #medalmonday is special. It’s not the biggest or prettiest medal, but this race was never about the medal. It was about finishing an ultramarathon on my birthday weekend. To finish this race took so much more than any race I’ve run before. Not because of the 30ish mile distance or even the 5500+ elevation gain. This race drew blood… literally. Left quad tendinitis which became inflamed and tightened up at mile 3 made me work for every left step after, especially on the downhills, and then a face first fall down a single track on mile 11 which left cuts on my palms, shoulders, chest, and face made for a very rough race. Regardless, dropping down or out of this race never crossed my mind. It was not ideal as far as races go, but I would not have had it any other way. #throwbackthursday birthday edition. The Bulldog 50K fell on my birthday last year, but they do not allow Vibram Five Fingers, so I decided to run my own “50K”. 32 miles for 32 years. I created a route that connected all of my run clubs together. Starting at A Snail’s Pace in Mission Viejo, through the hills of Aliso to Laguna Beach, up PCH to Fashion Island (Lululemon/Nike), through the Back Bay (Sat run), and ending at South Coast Plaza (Nike). I had some friends who attempted to run the entire route with me, with various other friends jumping in and out at various check points throughout the day. It was such an amazing experience and still one of my more memorable birthday moments. Throwback Thursday - Birthday Edition

My birthday is on Sunday and on Saturday I will be running my first official ultramarathon at the Bulldog 50K in Calabasas, CA. Today's special birthday edition #throwbackthursday is a throwback to my birthday last year. The Bulldog 50K fell on my birthday last year, but they do not allow Vibram Five Fingers. I decided to run my own "50K". 32 miles for 32 years.

I created a route that connected all of my run clubs together. Starting at A Snail's Pace in Mission Viejo, through the hills of Aliso to Laguna Beach, up PCH to Fashion Island (Lululemon/Nike), through the Back Bay (Sat run), and ending at South Coast Plaza (Nike). I had some friends who attempted to run the entire route with me, with various other friends jumping in and out at various check points throughout the day. It was such an amazing experience and I was fortunate enough to catch most of it on video. Here is the #tbt video from last year:

Although I’ve moved on to #garmin / #strava, I still sync my runs to Nike since it was the first app I used and is pretty much my total mileage since starting long distance running. It’s amazing to think how many miles and memories have gone by in the past couple of years. #flashbackfriday to the 2013 Long Beach half marathon. My first half marathon after recovering from an injury earlier in the year and my first race as a low carb runner. I was still developing as a runner and not 100% fat adapted so it took everything out of me to hit 2:02. Yesterday, I received the word that I was assigned the 2:00 hour pacer spot for this year’s Long Beach half. It’s amazing how something that seemed so out of reach a couple years ago can be become an easy pace/effort with training and consistency.
