While most people are in recovery mode from #lamarathon, I need to continue on with my #leonadivide5050 training. 6.5 rainy miles and some hills thrown in with some of our #lululemon #chasingnewport fam tonight. Even though @lamarathon has always been a tough race for me it’s still one of my favorite races. I love the support from the city. LA comes out in full force cheering you on, giving you water and snacks, and just giving you energy to push toward that finish line. The sheer amount of people running the marathon by your side from start to finish is like no other race I have experienced. It’s just an endless sea of runners in front and behind you. We were very fortunate that the weather predictions didn’t come through and we had such a beautiful day. Especially, in comparison to last year’s heat. This photo taken during the @lamarathon expo captures my nonchalant approach to this race. Such a contrast to how I approached it last year where I trained for months pushing myself with a goal time in mind. I was focused on my training and nutrition and anxious about the race. This year I did the bare minimum training wise and my nutrition was not on par. I went against all the pre “marathon” rules. I didn’t stay off my feet all day and didn’t eat much the day before. I had a great time just experiencing the expo, Olympic trials and everything that came with it. I worked the #ocmarathon booth Saturday in between going to talks by Meb and Dean and watching the trials. I was so much more relaxed and at peace before the race but it would come back to bite me on race day. I’m still reflecting on Sunday’s race. I’m really at a loss on how I feel about it. On one side, the race was about helping my girlfriend just finish her first marathon and with that I didn’t take the preparation as seriously I normally would have. Will post more on that later. On the other side I want to gauge my performance and where I’m at fitness wise, especially with my 50 miler coming up. It’s hard to properly assess your performance when you’re not running your race. This was my longest individual road race since #rnrseattle full last year in June. On the plus side, I had zero stomach issues which plagued me in Seattle and #rnrsd. I didn’t blow up half way through like I did in LA last year, but even then, my time last year was better by 10 minutes. This year, my fastest splits were in the final 2 miles, but I had some cramping in my quads and calves which are not common for me, and are my biggest concerns because otherwise everything else felt positive. One thing is certain. This week my New Balance MR00s hit 1000. They’ve done me well through weekly training, 2 full marathons, 15+ half marathons through 10 different states. Many memorable miles put in on these babies. I love minimalist running as I am not dependent on the shoe for “support” and the #vibram soles last so long.
